The nation’s milk processors and dairy farmers are working with Feeding America, the leading domestic hunger-relief charity, to launch the Great American Milk Drive– the first-ever program to deliver milk to hungry families. Hunger is a problem that impacts 1 in 6 Americans, including more than 12.5 million families – almost 745,000 people right here in Wisconsin. Feeding America and Second Harvest food banks receive the equivalent of less than one gallon of milk per person per year.
With a simple click of a mouse (www.milklife.com/give) or text message (text MILK to 27722) it is now possible to donate as little as $5.00 to generate milk coupons for food banks to distribute. All donations become local and are shared with food banks in zip codes linked to your own community. This truly is a neighbor helping neighbor initiative to achieve a more nutritious diet. Every dollar collected will go to purchase and deliver fresh, nutritious milk to hungry families.
Students and groups can easily make this a service project and generate direct donations to the Great American Milk Drive. Please pass this information on to student leaders, co-workers and parents. You might also consider sharing a note or link about the Great American Milk Drive on your personal Facebook pages or social media accounts to help spread the word.
It’s a big idea, but the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board is excited to share the initiative and make a difference in the lives of hungry families. Help us ensure that every family in America’s Dairyland can have a glass of cold milk with dinner every day.
