Attend one of the beekeeping classes offered at the Dane County Extension Building in Madison.
Beginner classes will repeat on January 30, February 20, March 19, April 9 and May 7, 2016.
This class is intended for those with no experience in beekeeping, topics include everything you need to know during the first year: elementary bee biology, what to do about swarming, what about the neighbors, splitting a hive, or moving it, equipment and protective gear, pests and diseases, installing your first package, harvesting your honey with tips on selling, inspecting your hive and preparing for winter.
The second step class is on March 5, 2016. This class is intended for those who have already kept bees one year and find themselves with additional questions. Topics include
bee behavior, splitting hives and making increase, equipment beyond the basics, swarm capture, inspecting, pests and disease treatment, queens and preparing for winter.
All classes start at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. at the Dane County UW Extension Building, 5201 Fen Oak Drive, in Madison. The $50 fee covers coffee, handouts, sample journals and catalogues and props for you to handle.
Individual, hands-on mentoring also is available for $20 for two hours in the apiary.
