This past Monday night, Taylor and I had the privilege of running the first Collegiate Farm Bureau (CFB) meeting of the year. While just entering its fourth year, the club had 36 students attend the meeting, all interested in contributing to CFB’s efforts of promoting agriculture on campus and around the Madison area.
In the past, Collegiate Farm Bureau has promoted agriculture through two main avenues: Ag in the Classroom visits to area elementary school classrooms throughout the year and Ag Day on Campus in April.
Ag Day on Campus allows our members to reach out to the Madison community interested in learning about the source of their food, specifically our fellow students who may not be studying agriculture. Our main goals include starting a conversation about modern agriculture, sharing what farmers do every day and making personal connections with these consumers. Last year, one of our key messages focused on helping us make these connections: “We are farmers and your fellow Badgers.” Free samples of Wisconsin food products were handed out to help initiate these conversations.
CFB also aims to further develop its members professionally and socially. Back for its fourth year, the discussion meet encourages members to discuss agricultural policy issues in a competitive situation. The UW-Madison CFB chapter aspires to help members grow in their knowledge and exceed expectations in the contest. Our members also have opportunities to attend the WFBF Young Farmer and Agriculturist Conference and the Ag Women’s Summit. As for social events, our annual cookout was a huge success. Other new socials will be added this fall, meant to promote bonding among members.
This year looks to be a bright one. We’ll see you April 23, 2014 for Ag Day on Campus!
