<\/span><\/p>\nA Wisconsin native<\/span>, <\/span>Dick <\/span>has been surrounded by agriculture his whole life.<\/span> <\/span>He earned his Ph.D.<\/span> <\/span>in soil science from UW-Madison. He and his wife<\/span>,<\/span> Kim, returned to the family farm with<\/span> a<\/span> determination to turn i<\/span>t<\/span> into a successful <\/span>b<\/span>usiness<\/span>. <\/span>Dick<\/span> <\/span>and Kim<\/span> <\/span>co-own Cates Family Farm LLC in Iowa County with son Eric, his <\/span>wife<\/span>,<\/span> Kiley, and their daughter Shannon and her <\/span>husband<\/span>,<\/span> Dan. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\u201c<\/span>Farm Bureau is about people working together to get a job done. There are always some who stand out because of special contributions they have made to Wisconsin agriculture <\/span>and Dick is one of those outstanding peopl<\/span>e,<\/span>\u201d said WFBF President Joe Bragger. <\/span> <\/span><\/p>\nIn 1995, Dick helped create the Wisconsin School for Beginning Dairy and Livestock Farmers, which is a program<\/span> within UW-Madison\u2019s <\/span>Farm and Industry Short Course and Center for Integrated Agricultural Systems<\/span> that teaches young farmers what they need to know when starting their farming businesses. <\/span>This program <\/span>has assisted more than 600 young and not-so-young individuals to start, or move towards, their dream to farm. Dick retired from this work in 2018, but <\/span>during<\/span> the 23 years he also developed and taught courses in grassland ecology, pasture management, managed grazing and agroecology within the College of Agricultural & Life Sciences at UW-Madison.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\nPreviously, <\/span>Dick se<\/span>r<\/span>ved on the <\/span>Wisconsin <\/span>Department of Agriculture<\/span>,<\/span> Trade and Consu<\/span>m<\/span>er Protection Board of <\/span>Directors<\/span> and the USDA Se<\/span>c<\/span>retary\u2019s Advisory Council for <\/span>B<\/span>e<\/span>g<\/span>inning Farmers and <\/span>R<\/span>anchers.<\/span> <\/span>Dick serves on the boards of the Town of Wyoming<\/span> (elected official),<\/span> Spring Green Fire District, <\/span>Driftless Area Land Conservancy, <\/span>Upland Hills Health <\/span>Foundation,<\/span> and the Sand County Foundation.<\/span> Additionally, t<\/span>he Cates family has been recognized for their soil and water conservation work through various awards since 1998<\/span> and <\/span>are members of the Iowa County Uplands Farmer-<\/span>L<\/span>ed Watershed Project and the Lowery Creek Watershed Initiative.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\u201c<\/span>Dick<\/span>\u2019s commitment to the agriculture community is admirable<\/span> because he leads by example<\/span>,\u201d said <\/span>Bragger<\/span>. \u201cHe is extremely deserving of this award.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\nWisconsin Farm Bureau Federation is the state\u2019s largest general agriculture organization representing farms of all sizes, commodities and management styles.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"On Dec. 4, Richard (Dick) Cates Jr. was presented the \u2018Distinguished Service to Wisconsin Agriculture\u2019 award for his outstanding, long-term contributions to Wisconsin\u2019s agricultural industry during Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation\u2019s virtual 101st Annual Meeting.
