Wisconsin Farm Bureau commends the state Assembly\u2019s passage of Assembly Bills 73, 74 and 75 today. Along with 12 other state agricultural organizations, WFBF submitted a letter to members of the Assembly requesting support for these important pieces of legislation.<\/p>\n
Assembly Bills 73 and 74 would prohibit the labeling of food as milk or as a dairy product or ingredient if the food is not derived from the milk of a cow or other hooved mammal. AB75 would prohibit the labeling of food as meat if the food is not derived from the flesh of an animal, fish, mollusk or insect.<\/p>\n
\u201cFarmers and processors have worked for generations to establish the reputation Wisconsin products have in the marketplace today,\u201d said WFBF President Kevin Krentz. \u201cThese bills provide greater transparency and clarity for consumers while accurately labeling our wholesome products.\u201d<\/p>\n
These bills also align with existing but currently unenforced U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations. The implementation of these labeling provisions will go into effect once other states adopt similar food labeling legislation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese bills not only protect consumers but also Wisconsin\u2019s $46 billion dairy industry,\u201d Krentz added. \u201cIt is encouraging to see strong bipartisan support on such important topics.\u201d<\/p>\n
