Name: Eric and Rachel Harmann ""

Farm: Lakeshore Land & Livestock

Location: Algoma, WI

Farm Bureau: Door County

Generation: 6th

Eric and Rachel raise beef cattle with their family on the shores of Lake Michigan. At Lakeshore Land & Livestock, sustainability means being intentional in taking care of their animals and their land. Protecting the water is important for their family, farm and community.

Eric and Rachel have learned from previous generations how to manage their unique and special land. They consult with other farmers and experts that know the area and soil.

A tree line separates the pastures at Lakeshore Land & Livestock from the shore of Lake Michigan. The land is well suited to raise beef cattle. Rotationally grazing their beef cattle benefits wildlife and reduces erosion.

In addition to rotational grazing, the Harmanns are experimenting with no-till.

Regular soil testing has shown an increase in organic matter in the soil at Lakeshore Land & Livestock. They are applying manure over commercial fertilizer. They also implement grassed waterways in their fields to slow erosion.

Eric says their biggest sustainability-related challenge is implementing no-till and convincing older generations that it is sustainable and can be profitable. Eric collaborates with other farmers to learn new ideas and find out what has worked for others in the area.
