The extended theatrical run of the feature-length documentary FARMLAND, by Oscar® and two-time Emmy® winning filmmaker James Moll, will reach its end this week after playing in more than 170 markets nationwide, often screening multiple times in the same theater and to many sold-out crowds including during four week-long runs in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Salt Lake City.
FARMLAND profiles six farmers and ranchers in their twenties, all of whom have assumed the responsibility of running their family businesses. The film, which premiered during the Tribeca Film Festival in April, played in more than 60 major metropolitan cities and to nearly hundred thousand people from Boston, Massachusetts to Kauai, Hawaii.
Announcements about non-theatrical events such as college and high school screenings and future viewing options for the documentary will be made soon.
“The phenomenal success of FARMLAND on the big screen shows that consumers want to know more about the people growing and raising their food,” said Randy Krotz, chief executive officer at USFRA. “Further distribution plans are underway to bring FARMLAND to millions of Americans, introducing them to the next generation of modern agriculture.”
The film was released in major markets across the country on May 1, 2014. The documentary also was in competition at the Cleveland International Film Festival, the Atlanta Film Festival, the Nashville Film Festival and the Newport Beach Film Festival.
“Most Americans today have never stepped foot on a farm or ranch,” said USFRA board member Mike Geske. “The thing that most excites me about Farmland is that it’s an opportunity for the non-ag audiences to learn how our food is grown and raised by people with a passion for this way of life.”
